Vila Olimpica

The Olympic Games of 1992 permanently changed the image of Barcelona. Sports games took place on the hill of Montjuic and the city center of Barcelona. The most radical change, however, hit the quayside, where the Olympic village was located. Part of old postindustrial Poble Nou has been replaced by new fresh spirit of Vila Olimpica.

Before preparing for the Olympic Games began quayside served as the industrial waterfront. Port provided places of work for local inhabitants. In the early nineties everything changed. In place of port appeared promenade.

The ring road was built in purpose to link the future Olympic Village with the rest of Barcelona.Industrial district become small town with an area of 65 hectares, including more than two thousand apartments and a large park.

Finally, in the Vila Olimpica also two towers were released, rising up to a height of 44 floors.

I was thinking for the long time on place in Warsaw that I can compare to Vila Olimpica. And I realized that for Warsaw and for people who live there, there is no such place as this… yet. But it is happening right now – during Warsaw’s preparation for 2012 UEFA European Football Championship.

Unfortunately it is not Olimpic Village, but changes are significant. Finally something is happening with old 10th Anniversary Stadium and huge recreational area around it. For past two decades it was used as the biggest in Europe open-air market – with approximately 5000 traders registered and another half of them unregistered.

Plenty of investments are taking place now in Warsaw according to European Championship. Furthermore the authorities of Warsaw put huge emphasis on improvement of communication, building new roads and second line of subway.
